GYMBEAUX’S RULE!

With that said, I took two or three principles I learned in all that study material and operating a real estate company and came up with the title of this Nugget: 

“NEVER, EVER, PISS OFF A POTENTIAL PAYING CUSTOMER!” 

It’s important to understand who is saying things, who is writing things, who is posting things and does the person who says, writes, or posts  the information YOU read or watch, qualified to do so?  What are my qualifications for writing this Nugget?  I attended only two years of college majoring in marketing and advertising when I decided that since I felt like a square peg in a round hole, I needed to go elsewhere to create my career and life.  I turned to the military and spent 20 years in the U. S. Coast Guard.  During my last several years, I worked on (1) obtaining a real estate salesman license in Louisiana (that was 1980).  I continued to study real estate while on active duty by taking classes and attending real estate seminars.  I earned a Real Estate Broker’s License from the State of Louisiana in 1982 and I retired from the Coast Guard in 1985.  I spent the time from 1980 to 2012 as a real estate salesman, real estate office manager, real estate broker, real estate trainer, co-owner/broker of a real estate franchise, and that is where I learned the very basics required to run a business: SUCCESSFULLY!  From 1982 to the present, I spent a lot of my free time reading books, eBooks, articles on real estate, business and business success principles.  As a result, I can proudly say I have read over 1200 books and an unknown number of articles/papers on real estate and business since 1980.

The key word in that quote is PAYING followed in the quote and in its importance, the word – CUSTOMER! 

Today is October 24, 2024 and I heard and saw Hollywood actor Michael Keaton, who posted a video of him saying how former President Donald Trump along with Elon Musk considered “young men as being stupid” (his words) and he also said that Trump and Musk “were laughing behind their backs and that is why they should vote for Kamala Harris.”   WARNING;  THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL NUGGET SO DON’T STOP READING IF YOU THINK THAT IT IS! 

Michael Keaton and other celebrities and professional athletes are both IN BUSINESS and they also create A BRAND!  They all get paid to do what they do.  But when they venture into the world of politics like Keaton did today, THEY JUST PISSED OFF A VERY LARGE NUMBER OF FUTURE POTENTIALLY PAYING CUSTOMERS!  What on Earth was he thinking, or NOT?  Anyone who supports Trump and not Harris is immediately pissed off.  Does Keaton care?  Obviously not.  Is it possible that some or a large number of the people who heard him say what he said, may decide that they will NEVER attend (paying customer) one of his movies ever again?  Will one or more of the people he just offended take a public political stance themselves and spread the word as I am now to whomever will listen?  ABSOLUTELY, I JUST DID!  Will I ever watch or more importantly PAY TO WATCH A MICHAEL KEATON MOVIE?    Probably not; provided I have an alternative choice which I most assuredly will.  By taking a very public political stance, he is saying to approximately half the population of America that he knows what is best and you are stupid if you don’t listen to what he has to say and then do what he suggests you do as if you really are too dumb to figure it all out.  The same applies to Elon Musk and his many business ventures.  When he took a public stand for Donald Trump, he turned off a lot of potential paying customers.  Did he care?  I seriously doubt it since he was one of if not the richest person in the world already.  

If Michael Keaton and Elon Musk took the stands they did out of principles, then more power to them.  But…they still pissed off upwards of half the country since the country seems to be split about 40% to the Left, 40% to the Right and about 20% somewhere in the middle.  If people like Keaton and Musk did do what they did out of principles, then they KNOWINGLY did so in spite of a potential loss of revenues! 

This Nugget is not about Michael Keaton, Elon Musk, Donald Trump or Kamala Harris.  It is about opening you mouth or writing flowing words on subjects that are KNOWN to cause a divide amongst the people who hear, watch or read what you have to say.  Therefore, in the real estate business (my former business) I would teach my real estate agents of all ages and genders that they should NEVER DISCUS OR DO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING WHEN IN THE PRESENCE OF PAYING CUSTOMERS: 

Politics!

Religion!

The Competition, tell them what YOU can do for them, not what your competition cannot do

Anything sexual in nature or that might be construed as being sexual

Any of YOUR personal likes and dislikes, it’s NOT ABOUT YOU, IT’S ABOUT THE CUSTOMER!

Talk on your phone without telling how the conversation will benefit the customer, otherwise, STAY OFF YOUR PHONE!  PERIOD!  In fact, TURN YOUR PHONE OFF in the presence of the POTENTIAL PAYING CUSTOMER and tell them how THEY are far more important to YOU and YOU do NOT want anything to interfere with your meeting.

Wear a watch to an important meeting, any meeting but especially one with a POTENTIAL PAYING CUSTOMER!  If during your meeting you even glance at your watch, you are sending a horrible message to the potential paying customer that you have a more important place to be.  Proof?  Consider the damage President Biden did when he just glanced at his watch as they were taking the remains off an airplane and the deceased family members were in attendance.  Who knew that a WATCH could send such negative messages?

Always dress for the occasion! 

In real estate, ALWAYS drive a clean car but especially the inside!  No food, no toys, no bags – CLEAN!

Today, Michael Keaton intentionally damaged his business and definitely damaged his BRAND!  When you are in business you are also creating and nurturing a BRAND that people (all potentially paying customers) see, remember and share with their friends.  Even people who may think they are NOT in business, such as people in the medical field like doctors and nurses and anyone that works a reception desk, but they ARE in business.  People may come to them for the first time just out of chance or they may have been specifically referred to you and your business by a friend or another business professional; the best kind of new customer/patient.  Therefore, building your BRAND begins the moment the customer/patient opens the door to your business.  What will their first impressions be?  Will they be good or will they be bad.  Will they refer THEIR friends to your business or will they write scathing comments about it and post them on social media platforms?  The choice is yours! 

I know of a Chiropractor who owns his business and at least once a week, he arrives at his place of business early and gets in the mindset that HE is the CUSTOMER or in this case the PATIENT.  He makes notes about what he sees, what needs to be changed, what repairs should be made or in other words, what are his first impressions; the same first impressions a POTENTIAL PAYING CUSTOMER or  PATIENT would have upon first arriving and then entering his place of business.  I found that attitude very refreshing and enlightening.  How many businesses have you entered only to be disappointed at the uncleanliness, a place in need of painting; lights out or flickering; and/or insufficient lighting to read by?  Or difficult if not impossible seating arrangements where customers/patients are expected to fill out questionnaires?  Or have you ever been given a form made by the business and the form did not give you sufficient space or spaces large enough to write down everything you need to write?  The list is endless.  The THREE biggest detriments to being a successful business are: 

 FIRST IMPRESSIONS
LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM
BUSINESS IS KNOWN FOR TAKING PUBLIC  POLITICAL POSITIONS (Starbucks) 

You could add a less observable fourth category and that would be that a customer feels like the business is talking “down” to them as if they were a child.  This would result in an insult to the customer’s intelligence. 

There is a fifth subject that I seriously doubt most businesses are even aware of.  Simply put, what are your and your business’s rules/regulations/operating orders on working with customers that may be handicapped?  Have you ever thought about it in advance?  I was guilty of that as we had no policies in place, verbal or written. 

I discovered the hard way that my business had never addressed the issue when the receptionist took a call and the caller was very difficult to deal with.  Then the receptionist discovered that there was a third party involved.  Sadly, the Third Party did not adequately describe the situation.  She was talking to someone who was listening and then repeating something that originated by a person incapable of talking on the phone; the real caller could not speak.  Therefore, he was typing his part of the conversation which was received by the third party who then spoke to the receptionist.  There was an obviously long delay between speaking and then responding and this came as an unexplained aggravation to the receptionist as it would have to me.  We had no training to deal with such a call but we did AFTER the call had taken place.  The caller was upset, The Third Party was upset.  I learned very quickly that every business should be aware of the provisions of The Americans With Disability Act.  It should have said PEOPLE with disabilities because more than just Americans frequent your business.  

Like Michael Keaton’s video, these are the type of things that can DESTROY your business and/or your brand, not to mention your reputation.  By the way, I also learned the hard way about people with service animals when a customer came into the office with a monkey, that’s right, a monkey.  My first response was based on the damage I know animals like monkeys can cause including biting, urinating, and other horrible things and that brought on an initial thought of not letting the customer in with the monkey in tow.  It is obviously a much longer story, suffice it to say, you need to be prepared for the unknown, whatever that may be.  You are strongly encouraged to take a deep breath before you react instead of responding to an unusual situation such as the monkey that turned out to be a service animal. 

I don’t know Michael Keaton but I seriously doubt he truly considered the bigger picture of what he did today. 

If you want to avoid what Michael Keaton did, my advice would be to abide by my Business 101 quote/rule.  If you are a real estate agent, sell real estate!  If you are an actor, act!  If you are a singer, sing!  Unless you can afford to lose business and damage your brand/reputation, stay out of politics to the point of not even putting a political sign in your yard.  You do not want people to avoid doing business with you because you took a public political position!  Never ever piss off a potential paying customer!  EVER!  Otherwise, plan to pay the consequences! 

For the record, I fully retired on December 31, 2012.  I no longer counted on “potential paying” customers for my income and no longer have to worry about what I say or do that may discourage people from doing business with me because I no longer am in business.  It is actually fun being free to do, say and write what I want but I can assure you, if you are in business of any kind or if you rely on people coming to you to spend money that goes to you and your family, abiding by my Business 101 Rule should be the rule of the day for you and all of your employees/agents!  Want proof?  I haven’t given Michael Keaton one second of my time since I saw him in Beetlejuice and that was years ago.  I understand he has a new movie on the market.  How many tickets did he just throw to the wind with his video posted today?  No one knows for sure but there must be more than he ever thought.  Sadly, he has made enough money during his career that he probably is unaffected by the potential lost of customers.  In Hollywood, they refer to it as having enough “f$#K You!” money so that the person having this much money simply does not care what they say and do.  I personally have never been in that position so I can only imagine what that must be like.  Unfortunately, most of the people I have come to know in my life, can’t afford to turn away a potential paying customer, can you?  Keaton may be to afford it but what about all the people that help make his movies down to the small business that may run a food truck on the movie set?  What about them?  Can THEY afford for Keaton to do what he did today?  Maybe some, but certainly not all!

Do Your Children and Yourself A Favor!

 DO YOUR CHILDREN AND YOURSELF A FAVOR!
MUSIC AND BRAIN WAVES

I find it both funny and strange that as I grow older, how many times I find it difficult to remember things like names and dates but other things that have proved to be of great importance in my life, linger in the mind as if they just happened.  One of those “things” is the great affect listening to the “proper” type of music has on the brain as to what you can learn and create.

The class was held in Picayune, Mississippi and was organized and scheduled by RE/MAX Dixie Region for its RE/MAX agents in Southern Louisiana and South Mississippi.  The presenter was  BOB DAVIS.  I vividly remember his message when he talked about the success the East German athletes were having as compared to athletes from around the world including the United States.  Why were they performing at such a higher rate of achievement than their competitors?  MUSIC!!!!!  Not just any music, BAROQUE MUSIC!   So simple but so effective as I have proven to myself MULTIPLE TIMES!  This was the time BEFORE computers became prominent.  Programs like Spotify did not exist.  Davis promoted a CD that had multiple variations of just one musical piece – THE CANON!  I bought one of his CDs and still have it.

Baroque music "stabilizes mental, physical and emotional rhythms," according to Chris Boyd Brewer, "to attain a state of deep concentration and focus in which large amounts of content information can be processed and learned."

The funny thing about The Canon, just about everyone has heard it multiple times but could probably not be able to name it.  It is played at almost every wedding.  It can sound classical or it can sound jazzy, easy listening, or just about any music genre you choose. 

I could try to explain it to you and it would take a scientist to do so; I am not a scientist. I can, however read and I can apply this oh so easy principle to prove to myself that it works.  I challenge everyone to give it a try.  First, I challenge you to read and absorb the message on the following link regarding Baroque Music.  I know, I know, it’s categorized as being classical music, sort of but just about everyone has heard the most popular of Baroque Music – THE CANON.  If you are a member of Spotify (and you should be), you can download the music free of charge.  If you want the music less the advertising there is a subscription that you can sign up for (which I have, love it).  The advantage of this shines like a beacon when you use music such as The Canon to study by.  When you use it to study, you do not want interruptions with the advertisements that would be spaced out while you are listening.

For the record, I created a playlist on my Spotify account that contains SEVEN hours of different versions of The Canon because I know how much this technique works.  In short, it involves brain waves.  Everyone’s brain gives off brain waves as do the various selections of Baroque music; the waves match each other.  As Davis explained, listening to the Baroque Music opens pathways into the brain and enables the listener to increase the ability to focus on what they want to achieve or accomplish.  It was hard for me at first to believe that listening to music could do that.  If you want to hear the playlist I created, you first must have a Spotify account (Spotify.com) and hopefully you can open this link to my playlist:

As a side note, I have read almost every one of Wallace D. Wattles books that he wrote in the 1900s.  In almost every book, he referred to “thinking in a certain way.”  Never has that been more evident than when Davis taught about listening to Baroque Music.  You don’t actually listen as you study or write or think about what is about to happen next (athletes).  The music is just on and you are actually focusing more on the task at hand than the music itself.  Don’t take my word for it when I tell you IT WORKS, try it for yourself and judge for yourself.

What’s important is that different music has different results.  If you or your children want to learn more and choose to listen to music while they study or write, listening to popular electronically generated music of the day mixes the brain’s ability to learn while listening.  Listening to Baroque Music opens the brain to learning and retaining more.  It’s that simple!

If you want to give your children a “leg up” on being able to better study and retain what they are studying, ask them to just give it a try.  The music is at least calming.  It is on as I write this.  I play it when I want to read a book.  I also play it when I just want to relax, totally relax!

ps:  There is another benefit of playing music when your children are present.  They remember that they listened to the music with you.  I know there are two such musical pieces that every time I heard them, memories of my Dad immediatly come to mind and that is a good memory to have.  Such as The Swinging Stars and Stripes by Henri Rene's Orchestra.

Everything I Know About Evacuating

 

EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT EVACUATING!
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

No one ever wants to evacuate their homes!  That is a given.  But when someone in authority tells you that you “need” to evacuate, I would not wait for further confirmation – evacuate!  The following are my thoughts and tips regarding an evacuation that you may or may not ever have to do.  The first thing everyone should do is have a plan to evacuate, so with that said, here we go.  I write this because I live in Southeast Louisiana and have had to evacuate multiple times the worst case was for Hurricane Katrina so I know a little about the process.

Voluntary vs. Mandatory evacuations.  It is very doubtful that the government will REQUIRE YOU (Mandatory) to evacuate.  I was told by a reliable source before Hurricane Katrina struck the area where I live, that IF the government ever MANDATED an evacuation, they would take on FULL responsibility for that EVERY resident had the means by which to evacuate. That obviously presents a problem because few if any local or even state governments have the resources available to help people evacuate and enforce a mandatory evacuation requirement.  Therefore, the vast majority of orders to evacuate an area are usually VOLUNTARY EVACUATIONS.  They are recommendations, suggestions, all with strong emphasis on the decision to evacuate being YOURS and YOURS ALONE!

WHEN SHOULD YOU CREATE AN EVACUATION PLAN?

Don’t wait until someone tells you that you “should” evacuate your area to sit down and create a plan for you and your family.  You should create the plan, outlining what you will do should you ever receive such a recommendation.  That time is when there is ZERO pending disasters on the horizon such as a hurricane, earthquake, flood, or even a volcano.  You should create the plan when the weather and environment is calm and again, no threat on the horizon.

MAKE A LIST!

I strongly suggest you begin your list by asking and answering questions that only you and other members of your immediate family can identify with.  Here are some questions that I would strongly suggest you consider:

1.      Where will we evacuate to?

2.      How will we pay for a short or long stay away from our home?

3.      How will we create a communication plan to keep family/friends informed of our whereabouts and safety and how to reach you?

4.      Create a list of people/organizations/businesses contact phone numbers and websites that you may eventually need to contact to ascertain your next step.  Local police department, insurance representatives, neighbors that might know the status of your property. You should get the idea.

WHEN DO YOU LEAVE?  I feel very strongly about this because I have seen the consequences of the actual time of the day you depart.

The time of your departure is important, I know this because I experienced it first hand what actually happens.  The first thing “most” people do is determine a time to leave.  Ask yourself, when you are leaving for an appointment or for work, what time do you leave?  Is it not usually at the top of the hour like 8:00 or on the bottom of the hour, like 8:30?  When I was commuting to New Orleans, I realized that it appeared everyone left their homes about the same time of the hour, either at the top or at the bottom.  That means there is a huge bubble of people all going in the same direction at the same time.  In between those departure times, less people are leaving their homes.  That is the best time in the hour to leave, like 1:15 or 1:42.  The second most important thing to consider is when would most people depart?  I discovered that most wait until the sun rises, or, right after breakfast or lunch or supper.  Very few people leave at 2:12 in the early morning hours.  In other words, do not do what MOST people do, do just the opposite and you should find less traffic on the highways.

DRIVERS

As stated, we evacuated several times.  During each evacuation you could not help but notice the length of time to get where you wanted to go was significantly longer than it would normally take under ideal conditions.  For example, you can usually drive from New Orleans to Houston in about 7 hours.  New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama in about and hour and a half; Birmingham about 5 hours.  But with all the cars on the road all headed in the same direction, out of New Orleans it took people hours and hours like 14 hours to get to Houston, Texas.  My advice is that hopefully you can have more than just yourself capable of driving because such a drive under extreme traffic conditions is both physically and mentally exhausting.  With multiple drivers you can take turns behind the wheel.  Don’t take this suggestion lightly, it is very exhausting and you cannot appreciate the level of the exhaustion until you have gone through it like I have.

PETS

Don’t be a moron and leave your pets behind.  Your plan should be to include accommodations in your vehicle(s) for your pets, all of them!  Leaving your pets behind in a closed up and locked home is NOT an option.  I am NOT saying what I am about to say but it needs to be said.  If you have no choice but to NOT take your pets with you, at least set them free or make an effort to have someone take responsibility for them.  This should not have to be said, but think about how many people leave their children in a parked car in the heat of the summer months?  Enough said? 

MEDICATIONS

Medication ARE a problem and I do not have a good solution.  Most pharmacies will give you at least a month supply of medications, some three months.  Hopefully you are on the three-month plan.  Yet even with a three-month plan, you may be at the end of the plan when you have to decide to evacuate.  What do you do?  You can always ask the pharmacy if they would give you an extra refill and explain why.  Keep in mind, you will not be the ONLY ONE in this situation and the Pharmacy may be swamped with customers or they may even be in the process of closing up in anticipation of the approaching storm.   But if you are like me and get your medications through the mail, that will not be option.  The best you can hope for is to always refill your prescriptions as soon as the pharmacy will permit you to do so.  Keep in mind that each member of your family including your pets may be on prescription medications so plan accordingly!  We were on the road for 4 weeks immediately following Hurricane Katrina.  Use that as a guide in making your plan.  There may be a time when there is nothing left to return home to!

CASH AND PRECIOUS METALS AND ANYTHING OF VALUE

You should always have some cash that you can immediately grab and leave with.  Remember, during severe weather and other disasters, the power will go down and you will not have access to ATMs, nor will most if not all businesses not be able to take transactions at an electronic register when you can only use a credit card.  You need to have some liquid assets that you can buy food, gas and lodging with if needed when there are massive failures of power over large areas of the country.  I would suggest that you purchase a fire resistant and water-resistant brief case with a lock on it to store your MOST valuable papers like insurance documents, wills, powers of attorney including a medical power of attorney, wait what?  Everyone should have a medical power of attorney that identifies the person that is authorized by you to make decisions that may be required about medical that you may not be able to make for yourself.  Papers such as these, if stored in a brief case that you can grab on a moment’s notice as you head out the door of your home, may be a priceless action to take.

As for precious metals, disasters such as hurricanes and severe fires may take everything including any precious metals, bonds, etc. left behind.  There are no guarantees that such items would be 100% safe in a bank deposit box as well.  Again, plan accordingly.

BATTERIES AND CHARGING CABLES/DEVICES

Just about everyone uses electronic devices.  Think ahead how you use the electronic devices and how will you keep them charged.  Some only use replaceable batteries so it would be wise to make a list of the size of batteries you need to take with you.  As for your computers, if it a laptop you can usually take it with you.  If you use a Desktop such as I do, taking a large computer with monitor with you is just impossible in most cases.  Ideally you have an automatic backup that stores your information at some offsite location or in the cloud that you can retrieve when you finally get setup wherever that may be.  If you do not have such a service, you need to somehow protect your hard drives.  One way to do that is have a detachable and portable hard drive to back up your important data including photos, bank records, etc.  When it requires you to leave your equipment at home, I would strongly suggest that you plan to use a strong garbage bag and TIGHTLY wrap your computer and seal it as best you can and then put the devices in a location within your home where it would stand the best chance of survival from both rising water, severe wind damage or the loss of your roof.

LOADING THE CAR/TRUCK

Clothes.  Take as much as a suit case(s) will hold, you may be gone a while.  Forget the formal stuff, take what you will probably be wearing that is both comfortable and warm if you will be gone over the winter months.  Each family member should have their own suit case and they should be instructed as to what to pack and what is not necessary to take with you in an emergency. 

What you load in your vehicle next is going to be determined by how much space you have left AFTER you load the suitcases.  In most cases, there will be very limited space so things like artwork, large photo albums, books, CDs, DVDs, old video tapes, lots of toys (you will need some if you have small children), etc.  DECIDE AHEAD OF TIME WHAT IS OF CRITICAL NEED FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS and then plan accordingly.

You may be on the road for a long time.  You will need some refreshments including bottled water.  You probably don’t need to have it kept cold so you don’t NEED to take up a lot of space with coolers and ice unless you actually do have the space to do so.  Medicines that are required to be kept cool may dictate that you take a cooler with some ice and my recommendation would be to purchase a small cooler but large enough to accommodate the medications you MUST take with you; Diabetic insulin comes to mind.  It does not take up much space so a small cooler should work nicely and take up very little space in your vehicle(s).

GAS

When you KNOW that something is about to happen and you can EXPECT that the power may go down, THAT IS THE TIME TO FILL UP YOUR VEHICLES, ALL OF THEM.  It is also the time to make sure you have also filled up any gasoline containers you typically have around your home.  Again, you may not be able to purchase gas once the disaster has passed, so again, plan accordingly.

INSURANCE(S)

While you are making up your plan, it would be a great time to review your insurance policies to ascertain what is covered and what is not.  Sadly, a lot of people who live in western North Carolina in the mountain areas probably did NOT have Flood Insurance.  I cannot speak for all areas of the country nor all insurance policies, only the ones that apply to me.  With that said, my homeowners’ policy DOES NOT COVER DAMAGE FROM RISING WATER (FLOODS).  Therefore, I was required to have Flood Insurance on my home as long as I had a mortgage on the home.  Once the mortgage was paid off, the decision to have or not have flood insurance was within my decision to make.  Application for Flood Insurance and for it to become effective usually takes 30.  Therefore, if a named storm were to enter the Gulf of Mexico, mortgage companies typically stop making home loans and it would be too late to have an effective Flood Insurance Policy.  I cannot say with certainty that all auto insurance policies cover rising water so it would be a great time to ask the question and research your policy specifics.

PROPERTY PROTECTION

If you have NOT made plans for a possible evacuation, it is probably too late to consider what you could do to best protect your home and property.  A lot of people in my area have purchased large sheets of plywood and cut them to fit as covers over the doors and windows.  You may or may not be in a position to do that yourself.  There are plenty of “handymen” around that you could hire to do it for you and then when a storm or disaster is approaching that allows you time to install the protections, the better chance you stand of NOT having damage due to broken windows.  Ensure that anything that could become a missile is properly secured.  This includes lawn and patio furniture, trash cans, etc.  As an example, we have a swing in the back yard.  If time permits, I can take the swing down which is not easy, so I tie up the swing to the frame to keep it as steady as I can make it.  These are the types of things you should do before you evacuate your home if time permits.

PASSWORDS

This could be a very serious situation!  Have you ever had to access a website or some type of online account and could not remember your password or words?  It is a pain!  You are strongly encouraged to make a list right now of all the most important websites and accounts you routinely access online.  Protect it with your most important papers.  If you do have to evacuate and then try to access an online resource from someone else’s computer, the computer will not recognize you and will not have the proper passwords.  The list will prove to be PRICELESS!

CONCLUSION

No one wants to evacuate their home.  Let me put it this way.  If someone tells you that they are going to kill you, I would take them seriously and do something about it.  Mother Nature may be about to be the person who is going to kill you – DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT TO PREVENT IT!  LEAVE WHEN TOLD TO DO SO!

Hurricane Katrina 20 years later - my thoughts having gone through it

Today as I write this Nugget, I am sitting in Birmingham, Alabama at my daughter’s home (who by the way is in England visiting her in-laws) and Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on our home in Slidell, Louisiana – a direct hit I believe it to be. 

For years I have watched as storms, earthquakes and other natural disasters struck other parts of the country and I could not help but wonder how I would feel, what I would think or how I would respond.  I guess that is why I like to watch some of the old-World War II films as I always wondered how I would have reacted when placed in Harm’s Way; I do not think anyone could know for sure.  I also cannot help but think that there will be a sequel to this Nugget when I finally get to return to whatever is left of my home and see it firsthand. 

For today, these are my thoughts as I watch television and the coverage of the storm as it approaches Slidell

I would like to pose a question to you:  “If you had only minutes or even a few short hours to make some decisions such as my wife and I had to make, AND you only had so much room in your car or truck, what would you take with you?”  Now before you answer, you really have to set the stage by remembering you have only a few minutes or at best a few hours to decide while at the same time get your home ready the best you can to take on the onslaught that it is about to experience. 

Assuming that my wife and my Miniature Schnauzer Sophie were going with me, what else would I want to take?  What would you take?  The family photos are the most precious to my wife (not that they are not for me but they seem MORE precious to her; they take up a lot of space, we have a lot of photos), the family photos were loaded onto the truck.  Insurance papers!  Of course, without them how would you know who to call?  Other family papers that would be difficult or impossible to replace such as Wills, Medical Powers of Attorney, etc.  When it came down to it, just about anything worth saving were “papers”, either documents needed for AFTER the crisis or documents/photos that simply could not be replaced.  Believe it or not, that included income tax papers and records.  Why?  Because I do not have the faith necessary to believe that our Federal Government would be understanding enough to realize that I may have just lost everything in my home including THEIR precious documentation of our returns and taxes in general.  How sad is that?  Dollar value?  Hardly any!  Emotional or sentimental value – priceless! 

We did not take many clothes with us, there was simply not enough room and I guess we are still hoping that our home will be left untouched or at least we would be able to retrieve things like clothing that may be soaked but not necessarily ruined.  

Now you can laugh if you wish, but the last thing I put in my truck besides myself were my golf clubs.  Not the entire bag, just the clubs.  At first, I was just going to leave them behind with everything else but then the more I thought about it, I realized that they were precious to me and for anyone who plays golf knows, clubs become very personal to you.  You finally got them just like you want them, the right heads, the right shafts, and the right clubs; how could you even begin to replace them?  New clubs are not the same; you want your old ones.  I was afraid to tell my wife that I was taking them with me so when I did, you can appreciate my surprise when she said, and “I thought they would be the first thing you want to take.” 

So now it is the next day, the storm is only minutes from Slidell and I had a chance to think about what we put in our truck.  You think of your military records, uniform, awards and medals.  You think of all the books that I have accumulated in my library that number in the hundreds.  You think of the knick-knacks around the home, some valuable, some just knick-knacks.  The china you were given at your wedding along with the silverware.  Your furniture.  The pictures on your walls, some expensive, most not that much, replacing them, however, would be difficult if not expensive.  Your tools. 

But you know what, all that can be replaced in time.  Even the books, I have read them, the knowledge is in your head, the books are but shadows of what you learned and Katrina cannot take that knowledge away from me.  There are things, however, that I really will miss.  I have a signed and numbered print by LeRoy Neiman that proudly hangs (hopefully) on my wall.  It was at this thought that my mind suddenly went negative.  You start to think of all the "what if’s” that could happen.  What if this…  what if that…  Then is really hit me.  What if my home survives the storm or is only partially damaged, and then “what if” the looters take over?  It was then I got angry, not over my home being hit by a storm, that is by “chance”, but looters, that is not by chance, that is opportunity for people lacking principles, ethics and/or civility.  I know they will be busy throughout Louisiana and Mississippi over the next several days and there is nothing that I can do about it.  

But even that can be put into perspective.  When I deal with a crisis of any kind, I always ask myself, one month from now, a year from now, 5 years from now or after I am gone from this Earth, will anyone really remember what happened on this day or as a result of some activity?  I doubt it.  Every day we have opportunities to make a difference in someone’s life (by the way, those opportunities did not make it in the truck either).  That is what is important.  The LeRoy Neiman is not important (cannot believe I just wrote that) and if the truth be known, neither are my golf clubs.  Diane and Sophie are important at least in our small world.  But what is really important is the difference I may have made in someone’s life – and even more important is the chain reaction that difference may have caused in many more lives; people I do not even know. 

It would be nice to know these things but even that is not important.  The important thing – I gave it my best even when my best may not have been good enough for someone – I gave it my best and in that knowledge I am OK.  I think it was A. L. Williams who said, “All you can give is your best and your best IS good enough!”

So maybe, just maybe, the most valuable thing I put in my truck, next to Diane and Sophie, was me so I can continue to give my best and hopefully provide something of value to others who in turn do the same for someone else. 

I am not blinded to the fact that as stated earlier, once I see my home in whatever condition it is in, I may have different thoughts but somehow, I do not think so.  In my desire to be honest with everyone, I will let you know.  

I ask you again, think about this.  If you had to leave town right now – what would you put in YOUR truck?

What’s Important Here – Part 2

Today is Friday, September 2, 2005 and it has been 5 days since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States.  The initial shock has worn off.  The television images will be with me the rest of my life.  The original Nugget, ”What is Important Here” is just as valid today as it was before Katrina struck – but my world has changed dramatically to where it will never be the same ever again. 

What has happened since Monday?  Let me review.

If I could have put all 72 of my real estate office crew and their families into my car, I would have.  As it stands now, I have heard from only 1/3 of them.  As for the other 2/3, who knows for sure?  I know people have died but were any of them part of my office team?  I feel confident that they are all safe and sound but the cell phones are not working or the circuits are too busy to take my calls, either way, I have no idea if they are safe or not or even alive.  That is not a good feeling. 

I used the Internet, more specifically email, to try to reach out to my crew.  Then came the surprises.  Email after email came in from Keller Williams Realty Market Centers throughout the country all offering some form of assistance.  They offered food, money, water, clothes, and/or a place to stay.  Frankly, the response was overwhelming.  Actually, it was MORE than overwhelming; it brought tears to my eyes (not an easy thing to admit for a macho guy like me J).  Not only did they come, they continued to come.  

Then I received an email from Mo Anderson of our Corporate Headquarters who informed me that Keller Williams International has raised more than $800,000 in just over two days of trying.  This is money donated from my fellow Keller Williams associates.  That speaks volumes about our company and its culture and beliefs. 

I am asked what can we do to help?  How do I respond?  I don’t know where all my associates are let alone their condition, financially, emotional or physical well being.  I know what it means to want to help as in 9/11.  You have such an overwhelming helpless feeling at the same time being a little grateful that it was not me.  To answer their question; I simply don’t know at this time.  I would suggest sending money to Keller Cares because it serves the Keller Williams Associates who are experiencing difficulties beyond those normally experienced in life.  In that regard, I would say Katrina would qualify.

Then my mind wanders onto reality.  How will my crew sell real estate over the next 4 to 6 months and thus earn an income?  This feeling was magnified today when I returned to Slidell and saw my city first hand and what Katrina had done to it.  It was not a pretty picture!  There were trees down everywhere.  Telephone poles were sheared off half way up the pole and the top with transformers were lying on the roadways.  There was damage to almost every building in one way or another.  Then I came upon my home.  There it was in tact.  Every tree lying on the ground with huge clumps of dirt and sod still on the roots but protruding upwards like a monument to Katrina.  Then in my back yard a massive tree, it had fallen only a foot from my home and a foot from two other homes.  It was as if God said it was time for this tree to die but it was not time for it to take out my home or my neighbors homes with it.  Instead, it looked like it had been gently placed on the ground between the three of us – imagine that!  The only real damage to my home was a missing attic vent/fan that left a 12-inch diameter hole in my roof and water stains on the ceiling of my master bedroom.  In addition, many roofing shingles were missing.  Maybe it signals a new roof.  Just two short weeks prior to Katrina I had called to get an estimate on my “old” roof; it was time.  Coincidence?  Maybe, maybe not! 

Then my wife and I went about Slidell to check on relative’s homes.  That is when the tears started to flow.  Beautiful homes with furniture piled up in the front rooms having been tossed and floating about the home in water up to waste high.  Garage doors literally blown out as the incoming water and wind literally pushed debris against the doors from the inside pushing the doors outward towards the street.  There was debris everywhere you look.  Damaged roofs, toppled trees, down power lines, abandoned cars.  Then I saw what I still can not believe.  A local car dealer had cars sitting on top of cars and one SUV was literally balancing itself atop fence in a ditch in front of the dealership.  Another rare site was a houseboat, in tact, sitting on the west bound lane of I-10.  When I checked my niece’s home, I was shocked to see a huge shipping container sitting on the front yard of the home next door to hers.  Where did that come from?   Her home also had water and the shingles on the roof were almost gone. 

One can not help but ask, why does this happen?  What have any of these people ever done to warrant such unbelievable destruction?  What are we going to do now?  Will we rebuild?  Will we relocate?  How are we going to survive?  How are we going to pay our bills which will not come because there is no one home and the Post Office is probably holding the mail anyway?  Even if I get a bill, the mailing address is in New Orleans and no one is going to receive it.  Then came the Big Question!  Why was I spared this destruction?  I am no better than any of the people whose homes were devastated.  

As I write this second Nugget, I have no answers to any of these questions.  I am simply grateful that it was not Diane and me sitting in the Superdome or treading water in New Orleans.  Is that selfish?  Maybe so, maybe not, but it is what I am thinking. 

Throughout this entire ordeal, I have a tremendous sense of pride.  First in the U. S. Coast Guard of which I was a member for twenty years.  You have to admit, they look great on television.  I have been out of the Guard since 1985 and I still get goose bumps when I see a Coast Guard Cutter or Helicopter go by.  Today I have a new sense of pride in the men and women of the organization I currently work for, Keller Williams Realty.  I am confident that in the future, I will experience those same goose bumps whenever I see a Keller Williams yard sign or advertisement.  There is the same unique oneness with each other that I experienced as a member of the Coast Guard team.  For those who are reading this and have not served in the Coast Guard or work with Keller Williams Realty, you will have to take my word for this – it is truly special. 

I am back in Birmingham, not knowing what the future holds nor does any of my crew.  Uncertainty abounds everywhere yet there is a feeling that all will be well if I just let it go wherever it wants to go.  That there is a higher power that already has a course for me and my crew to follow and that I ought to just let it happen.  I know I should look for signs; something that is there right in front of me but if I allow my mind to dwell on the disaster, I will fail to see it or worst, fail to act upon it.  There is no such thing as a coincidence!  Things happen for a reason.  Why was my home spared?  Who knows?  Why my neighbor’s home was severely damaged, again who knows? 

I do expect that there will be another Nugget to come when time wears on and patience wears thin.  How will I feel a month from now?  Will I be angry or excited?  Will I look upon this as a learning experience or a personal tragedy?  Will I be a better or worst person because of it?  Who knows; maybe so, maybe not!  Only time will tell but I do believe in the universal law of attraction; you become what you think of most.  If I am not very careful, I am destined to become a golf ball!

What’s Important Here – Part 3

When something as all-encompassing as Hurricane Katrina hits, one tends to lose track of time.  I had to stop and calculate not only what the date is but what day of the week it is.  Well, it is Wednesday, September 7th and I am alive and well working from my battery driven laptop.  

Tuesday, I decided that while staying with my daughter and her husband and two children, which was a fine thing to do, I also felt I had to get back to Slidell to start repairing my home.  At 3:30 AM, Tuesday I was on the road to Slidell.  While it was hot in Birmingham, this morning it was unusually cool.  I rolled down my windows and put “Watercolors” on my XM radio.  If you have not traveled over a long distance and have access to satellite radio, it is really unique.  I put on Watercolors, which is a smooth jazz station that I can literally listen to from one coast to the other without changing channels.  What does all this have to do with Hurricane Katrina – actually a great deal. 

There I was, on I-59 south out of Birmingham and I turned the volume a bit louder, and discovered really cool air on my face and in my hair.  In fact, it was so cool, I had to put the heater on in the truck. Then I realized, I was keeping time with the music with my head, my hands, my feet and my mind was actually clear of Hurricane Katrina.  Hardly a thought passed for the better part of the 5 hours it took to reach Slidell.  To people like Joe Sample, Herb Alpert, The Rippingtons, Rick Braun, Chris Botti and others, I sincerely thank you for mentally taking me to a place other than Hurricane Katrina. 

There is a lesson here; your mind can not focus equally well on two things at the same time.  Therefore, when you are really troubled, think about sitting back in your best chair, put on some music that allows you to get involved with the music and let go!  With all the trouble there is in New Orleans, there is nothing that I personally could do about it anyway, especially doing 70 (ok I was doing 77) on I-59 south.  So why not let go and give your mind a rest.  Not only did it rest, it was rejuvenated.  After 5 hours of smooth jazz, I was ready to kick butt and take no names let alone prisoners. 

Now it is one week and two days after the devastation.  I still have not heard from 30 of my 70 agents.  I am still confident that they are OK while the same I am sure, cannot be said for their homes.    Then I thought about something that occurred as recently as two weeks ago where an associate was really upset over something that happened.  I would dare say the agent has not given that incident one thought since Katrina – kind of puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?  But why do we have to endure something as horrible as Katrina to realize that life’s “little” problems don’t amount to a hill of beans so why do we let them amount to a hill of beans?  You don’t have to answer, it was just a question. 

It is hot in my home. I spent the last two days cutting up fallen trees and clearing my lot and patching the hole in my roof.  At first, I worked for about 2 hours and then took a 10-minute break.  Then for about an hour with a 20-minute break and you can guess where this is going.  I am not as young as my mind thought I was.  It was really hard work in a very hot sun.  You learn to appreciate not having to work that hard; that I can assure you.  You learn to appreciate the little things at times like this. For example, my home is very hot, every window is open, the sun is setting just over the top of my laptop and, yep, it was what I thought it was, a very gentle breeze cooling me ever so slightly.  When was the last time you gave thanks for a gentle breeze?  You don’t have to answer. 

I sit here at my laptop writing about my experiences with Katrina.  I have a chocolate Snack Pak pudding and of course my XM radio is on and Watercolors is playing more smooth jazz and believe it or not all is right with the world in spite of Katrina.  Sure, there are people in harm’s way but there are always people in harm’s way, some beyond their control and some within their own control.  By the way, Gregg Karukas is currently on Watercolors playing a song entitled “Healing Song”, is that a coincidence or what?

I received several phone calls today and that in itself was a small miracle.  One was from Lee Shelton whom most of you probably do not know but should and the other from Joe Tye whom most of you probably do not know but should.  Lee is an extraordinary man who has had a very creative life and now speaks to large groups about such things as “Creating Teamwork” something that everyone should hear.  He called to see how his student was doing.  Then Joe Tye called also to see how his pupil was doing.  Joe’s book “Never Fear, Never Quit” seems somehow very appropriate at the moment.  It would be easy to think of giving up and doing something else or going somewhere else.  Leave it to Joe to put things into perspective.  

I mentioned to Joe that it was easy to feel sorry for yourself until you realize how miserable some people are in downtown New Orleans.  Joe reminded me that pain is painful and it is OK to not only feel your own pain but to let go and give in to how you feel.  Holding back your pain accomplishes nothing.  Once you can acknowledge how you feel, it becomes easier to really let it go and move on.  This it is NOT the end of the world.  In fact, it is a new beginning.  We had BK and now we start AK (before Katrina and after Katrina). 

That noise?  Oh, that is another thing to be thankful for.  A gas generator; J   I hooked one up to a fan and now I am also thankful for a smallish hurricane that is blowing across my back.  It was off when I started this Nugget but as the sweat started to run down my arms and onto my keyboard; I thought it was time to light it off.  It was not totally selfish, my battery on my laptop was about to expire. 

What’s the lesson some 9 days after Katrina?  GIVE THANKS! 

What or who should I give thanks to or for? 

  • I am alive – God!
  • My home is in tack
  • I have my laptop computer and it is working
  • A gentle breeze through the screen window
  • Chocolate pudding
  • Gatorade lemonade
  • Gas generator
  • A fan that works
  • Lee Shelton
  • Joe Tye
  • Too many people to name who have called or emailed wishing me well
  • My office building is in tack
  • I still have my golf clubs

No one knows for certain what the future holds; it could be good, bad or indifferent.  It really doesn’t matter does it?   What’s important part 3?  

  • My wife Diane
  • My Miniature Schnauzer Sophie
  • The people who care about me and my well being
  • Geeze, I almost left off my golf clubs (had I not said that no one would have believed a word I said here) 

But the most important lesson I have learned 9 days into Katrina is to stop and give thanks to what is important and put everything else into its proper perspective because when it comes down to it, nothing else really matters. 

I have over my desk three very important papers: 

  1. 7 Habits of Highly Successful People –Stephen Covey
  2. The Self-Empowerment Pledge – Joe Tye
  3. The Traveler’s Gift – Andy Andrews 

These documents are very important to me and I review them on a daily basis to keep me focused on what is important.  As good as all three of these documents are, they left off one character trait I have learned as a result of Katrina and that is “to be grateful” and to “give thanks” even for the smallest of gifts like the cooling breeze over the top of my laptop when everything else seems to be falling apart around you.

I worked hard today; think I’ll try the vanilla pudding – I don’t think the grandkids will miss one or two of them.


What’s Important Here – Part 4

Another day, another life’s lesson learned!  Just when I thought I had seen it all, comes Keller Williams International and more specifically Keller Cares.  Yesterday I attended a meeting of the Gulf States Region that consisted of those Operating Partners, Team Leaders and Market Center Administrators that could make it to Baton Rouge – that in itself was a daunting task with limited gasoline, bridges out, road blocks and what have you.   Each Market Center briefed us on how they were coping, what kind of damage they sustained and how the individual agents made out.  

I did not have a lot to offer since I have been unable to talk with most of my agents.  In fact, as of yesterday, I had been able to account for only 50 of the 70 agents in the Slidell Market Center.  That was yesterday, today is today and I am in Birmingham when suddenly I have been able to contact more and more of my crew.  This has turned out to be one of the toughest days of my life emotionally.  Call after call I shared in my crews’ trials and tribulations and some of them have been severe.  Some are still missing family members, some had homes completely rendered uninhabitable, some with upwards of 4 feet or more of water in their homes and yet there was an air of optimism even in that hardest hit. 

Words fail to describe how it made me feel to report to them the reason for the meeting in Baton Rouge regarding what Keller Cares has done, is doing and will do for the Keller Williams associates and Market Centers that were adversely affected by Katrina.  Briefly, every Keller Williams associate (750 of them) will be adopted by another associate who will help them get back on their feet.  They will serve as sort of a guide to help them wherever the help is needed.  Each Market Center will also be adopted for the same reason by another market center  Keller Williams Cares has stepped up to the plate and has virtually guaranteed the salaries of all Keller Williams employees and will also help cover some of the operating expenses of those Market Centers in need of help.  The goal?  The survival of every associate and each Market Center. 

Amongst all this news about Keller Cares was hidden another wonderful fact and that is that we as a company have just surpassed the 50,000-associate count – loud round of applause please!  

Keller Williams associates and Market Centers have been providing assistance with money, supplies and facilities.  I am sure that in a short time everyone will know what everyone has been doing and I think everyone will be absolutely blown away at the response our company has provided its “family members.”  

There is one recurring thought that crosses my mind during times of crisis and that is “Oh but for the grace of God, there go I.”  I have felt that way during 9/11, the recent floods in the far east, etc.  It was always someone else, not me and for that I had been grateful.  Now it is US, my crew and the crews of the other affected Market Centers.  Words fail to describe the emotions that permeated the meeting room when Mo Anderson asked each of us to stand and hold each other’s hand while she said a prayer for us and our recovery.  It is NOT just about us – it is truly about the Keller Williams family and one member of the family is hurting everyone is hurting.

I am not an emotional kind of guy or at least I thought I wasn’t.  Today when making these calls, I discovered that I am not the macho man I thought I was.  I was emotionally caught off guard to first hear the voices of my crew that I had not been able to talk with for over a week.  Then to hear their stories, wow!  When I asked the Keller Williams Market Center in Birmingham if I could use their space, they immediately introduced me to everyone in the office from the Operating Partner, Team Leader, Market Center Administrator to associates.  It was then I met Ken and Linda Hankins.  Ken was counting up all the nickels, dimes, quarters and bills that had been collected in coffee cans on behalf of Keller Williams associates.  Linda then told me that she and Ken were donating 10% of every sale they make to Keller Cares.  I had to leave the room!  So much for being a macho kind of guy. 

This is going on all over the country.  Never have I been so proud to work for a company as caring as Keller Williams.  We will all have our stories to tell in the future about Hurricane Katrina but no story will be as moving or compelling as the response that was initialed by Mo Anderson and her team of angels in Austin and other Market Centers and associates around the country.  This is one very grateful Team Leader and I think I can speak for the associates in the Slidell Market Center (and probably the other affected Centers as well) when I say thank you.  I sincerely hope that no one ever finds themselves in the need of help as we have but if you do, your/our company will obviously rise to the occasion and respond as it has over the past week.  Everyone should pat themselves on the back – we will survive and come back stronger than ever but we could not have done it without the support of Keller Williams.

After the Storm

This Nugget was drafted in hopes of preparing others for what happened AFTER Katrina hit the Slidell, Louisiana area.  Some of the below items were to be expected while others came as a complete surprise. 

I am not sure who said it but believe it was Zig Ziglar, “Money tends to exaggerate that what we already are!”  By this he meant that if you are caring and compassionate, with additional money in your life you become even more caring and compassionate.  But if you are a greedy SOB, you simply become an even greedier SOB. 

If one thing was evident after Katrina, this theory has been proven to be correct.  Here are some of the things that have occurred since Katrina: 

  • If there were Purchase Agreements in effect BEFORE Katrina and the home survived, Sellers were trying to find ways to cancel the contract, put the home back on the market because they “felt” their homes were worth more than before Katrina.
  • Purchasers were writing Purchase Agreements that included a contingency that the repairs were to be made by the Seller prior to the Act of Sale which Sellers agreed to do.  Then during the home inspection process, they changed their mind with the false belief that they don’t have to make repairs because if THIS buyer does not want the home “as is” there are plenty of buyers who are desperate enough to take it “as is” and probably pay more to do so.
  • Real estate agents who prior to Katrina were admired and respected are now hanging up on people, threatening everyone with law suits and have become a general pain in the neck.
  • Buyers and sellers are constantly threatening law suits when contract negotiations do not go their way.
  • Some sellers are accepting offers for less money because the purchaser has a horror story as to what has happened to them and then a second purchaser who offered more gets upset because they did not get the property.
  • Multiple offers abound so if your procedures on handling multiple offers are not in place and everyone understands how to work them, it will only lead to serious legal problems.
  • Everyone wants rental properties and if you are in an area such as Slidell where under normal conditions there are not a lot of rental properties, this becomes a nightmare.
  • Sellers think their home is now worth $20,000, $30,000 to $90,000 more than pre-Katrina prices.  Appraisers are under close scrutiny by the Federal Government NOT to let all cash sales influence their appraisal process.  Therefore, the all-cash sales will not influence property values until there are sufficient numbers of cash sales where a trend can be established.  Over the long term prices may increase but in the short term they will only increase very gradually.
  • Patience is a rare commodity on the part of everyone, buyers, sellers, agents and even Keller Williams' associates.
  • Depression will set in, not if, when.  You need to know this is going to happen and be ready for it.  Traffic is a nightmare.  Slidell still has residents that have not as yet returned even after one month yet the population of our city must be at least double because of all the support workers and people that have come here to stay because their homes in other areas were destroyed.  There is a line to wait in no matter where you go.
  • If your home and business survived while so many others have been devastated, guilt creeps into your thought process, why was I spared?
  • The 80/20 Rule still applies but in reverse.  About 80% of the people accept what happened and what continues to happen and do their best to get into recovery.  The remaining 20% are impatient, rude, do what they can to get what they want when they want it and have little regard for anyone else. 

This is a slice of life AFTER Katrina and Rita.  I don’t want to paint an ugly picture because with every day there is one less pile of rubble and another business opening.  Our phones have been ringing off the hook.  Two, three and four calls coming in at the same time – that is a good thing if you can answer them all.  The real estate market, in my opinion, will be very good for some time to come.  Yes, there will be shortages but the market is definitely changing.  Prices in this area have been low as compared to other parts of the country and they will most assuredly begin to rise.  There will be tremendous development and repair work ongoing for one or two years.  Things are not all bad.  People are talking to people that they otherwise would not have talked to – that is a good thing.  People are helping people who before Katrina they did not even know.  

I close this Nugget with a true story.  My Call Coordinator was sitting in a line of traffic trying to get off the Interstate and get to work.  This in itself is an ordeal because it could take up to 30 minutes to get off the Interstate.  She noticed two men walking along-side the off ramp; one had no shoes and was obviously in pain trying to walk on stones and everything else you see along-side the roadways of America.  The car in front of her stopped and the driver got out, opened his trunk and handed the fellow a pair of tennis shoes.  The man began to cry on the spot.   A month ago, this would not have happened. 

Life has changed in Slidell and it will never be quite the same ever again.  In a great many regards, this is a very good change.  And by the way, during the next storm, there are 7 less trees to fall on my home!  And, that is a very good thing!  And if you want more good news, there are probably a hundred less trees to get in the way of my golf ball and that is FABULOUS NEWS!


Looking Back!

I cannot speak for the thousands along the Louisiana/Mississippi Gulf Coast yet I would be absolutely shocked if we were all not on the same page when I "look back" to ten years after Katrina. 

Like thousands of others, we evacuated our home in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Katrina.  I did not realize it at the time but I was saying goodbye to one Jim Brown and hello to another Jim Brown.  It literally took me years to realize that I left my old self in Slidell, Louisiana as we drove north to Birmingham to escape the wrath of Katrina. 

What caused me to look back?  I realized that for some time this non-emotional person became emotional when watching people being given the opportunity to share their stores on television about the things that changed in their lives.  Or even as I read something in a book, like the Ghost Boy story in the book Ghost Boy.  I could not help or stop the tears that would start to build in my eyes.  I never use to do that.  What caused me to become a more emotional person? 

In one word - KATRINA!  Hurricane Katrina was devastating to the Louisiana/Mississippi and even Alabama Gulf Coast.  I once had a real estate office in Gulfport, Mississippi so I was very familiar with the geography and real estate properties along the coast.  All was well with the world - so to speak. 

For the several weeks following Katrina the telephone services in our area were non-existent.  That is when a lot of people realized they could not TALK on their cell phones but they could SEND MESSAGES - figure that one out.  We became more proficient using features on our cell phones.  I took up business in a Keller Williams Realty office in Hoover, Alabama to try to continue the business activities in my Slidell, LA office.  My first priority was to locate the approximately 75 real estate agents in my office most of whom also evacuated the area in advance of the storm.  Over the first week all was going well, I had managed to contact about 61 of the agents but then as time when on, I could not contact about 14 agents and had no idea if they had become a casualty of the storm as over 1800 in the area had. 

I would sit quietly at the desk with a real phone (as compared to a cell phone) that was assigned to me by a very helping Keller Williams Staff.  That is when I realized my life was changing but I thought it was temporary.  I found it very difficult to talk when I finally tracked down the lost 14.  It was also difficult if not impossible to talk when anyone in the Keller Williams Office wanted to talk to me.  In every case, my voice would begin to crack and tears would well up in my eyes.  

It did not get better when I went to a training class in Austin Texas hosted by Keller Williams Realty International.  I thought I would get lost in the thousands of attendees and I could put Katrina behind me for a couple of days, or so I thought.  Not one but many approached me and gave me a hug praising God that I was safe.  It had not crossed my mind that just as I worried about the 14 I could initially not locate, I was part of a much larger group (the Keller Williams family) who also wondered what happened to members of THEIR Keller Williams family.  Then suddenly I would appear as if it was a miracle - it was not.  Like so many residents of my area - we simply survived.  But again, my emotions would control any response I tried to make.  Cracking voice, tears in the eyes and sometimes I noticed my body would actually shake. 

It was in Austin, TX that it all came to a head when Mo Anderson asked me to sit next to her on stage and tell the audience of about 90,000 (that is what it seemed like when I looked out over several hundred in the audience).  Most people did not notice when Mo Anderson started rubbing my back as I sat next to her.  Just the thought of that now brings tears to my eyes as I try to type this.  My emotions were taking over.  Then I stood up to talk.  I managed to get a few words out and to this day I can't remember what I said but then it started, I could not talk at all - period! 

Let me make it very clear, my family was physically unaffected by Katrina.  Sure, we had some trees down, a small hole in the roof and some cracks in the sheet rock, evidence that our home actually was shaken during the storm.  But otherwise, no real damage such as others had suffered.  Some were out of their homes for over a year while they were being reconstructed.  Others simply moved away.  Others bought whatever homes they could find that were still standing. 

What took over in Austin was a spontaneous drive by those in attendance.  They started to take up a collection to help the Keller Williams folks in the affected areas.  They collected over $80,000 if my memory serves me correctly.  But that was just the beginning.  The hundreds of owners of Keller Williams offices throughout the country deposited 10% of their office profits into an account that the 17 Gulf Coast affected Market Centers could use to cover operating costs for several months following Katrina.  Think about that, we were closed for at least a month or more meaning no sales, no income but the expenses continued.  This one factor insured that all the offices remained open and paid all their expenses thanks to the generosity of those hundreds of Keller Williams owners.  Also, over 5 Million Dollars from an in-house charitable fund (Keller Cares) were made available to ensure that every affected Keller Williams MEMBER was provided $5,000 of cash to help insure they could financially continue until they were made whole again.  All-in-all, it was a very emotional time for me and I did not appreciate the affect it was taking then or even until this day on my physic.  

Advancing to today, I find myself still tearing up over stories of individuals and families when they describe how they have responded to incidents in their lives, both good and bad.  It is not so much the incidents; it how they responded to the incidents.  And isn't that the way it should be?  How do we react to the things that happen to us?  Do we simply react or do we respond?  The winners respond! 

I am writing this Nugget because it will be 10 years this August 23, 2015 since Katrina struck this area.  As I drive along the Mississippi Gulf Coast you still go quite a distance where there are no homes where beautiful homes once stood; some very old.  Hard to make the drive without becoming emotional even 10 years later.  I saw a post on Facebook this morning that suggested that everyone you meet has an issue of some sort going on in their lives and that you and I are totally unaware of.  If you are one of those persons carrying a little baggage, maybe it is time you sought some assistance.  Just think about all the military personnel (and their families) who are carrying mental/emotional baggage from their experiences under battle conditions.  Inwardly a lot of people carryon a mental/emotional battle within obviously some very much more serious than others. 

You cannot "unsee" what you have seen and/or experience.  Like in the case of Keller Williams, you don't have to be a part of the battle, so to speak, to step up and help out in whatever manner you can.  In my opinion, that is what America once was.  Keller Williams Realty was and remains a microcosm of how great America once was - everyone helped those in need. 

WHAT AM I READING?  Kirsten Powers new book, The Silencing.  I have only read the first chapter and pray that the book eventually offers a ray of hope for America.  In Chapter 1, Powers writes about how there is an attack by the Liberal Left on the First Amendment guaranteeing all Americans the right of Free Speech.  Yet as she writes about her own political party, it is becoming more evident that the Liberal Left is FOR Free Speech as long as it is in compliance with the Left's beliefs otherwise any contrary speech should be condemned.  In support of her findings, she refers to people like John F. Kennedy Jr who totally  supports the Left's Global Warming position (now referred to as Climate Change) and how Kennedy has said that anyone opposing the Global Warming should be thrown in jail for eternity.  Really?  That is free speech?  Facts be damned; it's the Left's way or the highway for certain.  It is well written and well footnoted.   And while it is very depressing to read, that does not mean it is not a very good read thus far.  Again, I only pray that the remainder of the book offers some glimmer of hope; will let you know.


I’m Not Making This Up!

It’s late; it’s been a long drive home from the Mega Management Camp conducted by Keller Williams University in Austin, Texas.  Before I tell you my story, let me preface it with a follow up on the series of articles of “After Katrina” and “What Is Important Here.” 

I did not want to miss this opportunity to learn more about Keller Williams so even though my Market Center was recovering from Katrina, I decided to attend if for no other reason than to demonstrate that life goes on and we need to get back to “normal” whatever “normal” really is.  So, I went.  As I sit here at midnight, I am not sure it was the right thing to do.  The training and presentations were great, no they were magnificent.  I had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Fred Grosse who I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing almost 15 years ago.  I could not believe how many of his principles and sayings I have been using over the years and had forgotten from where they came – he was worth the trip!

The real reason I wanted to attend is that if you want to walk the walk, you must first learn to talk the talk and there is no better place to learn the talk than where it is taught – at Keller Williams University.  Reading about it simply is not the same.  Hearing “it”, hearing others describe how they use “it” and how “it” benefits them and their market centers, how “it” has not only helped to retain great associates, “it” also has improved production and profitability.  What is IT

It is the culture of Keller Williams.  It is not simply memorizing the WI4C2TS or the Mission, Vision and Values of the company, it is literally becoming those things in everything you do.  Walking the walk!  One of the most unique results of this session was the development of a Keller Williams Agent (I prefer Associate) Bill of Rights/Declaration of Distinction.  Everyone is going to applaud this effort when it is published. 

OK, so what’s my story?  From the moment I first arrived in Austin, I quickly became overwhelmed with emotion from the outpouring of support from our Keller Williams Family Members from all parts of North America including Canada.  I can not begin to tell you how many people said they had been praying for us.  I can not tell you how many people said they had read my Nuggets For The Noggin and used them in their Market Centers and had not had a chance to say thank you.  One Team Leader told me that for two days she thought she would never get the opportunity to say thank you and that since we all survived, she would never let an opportunity to say thank you to anyone ever pass again.  I think that was the beginning of the end for me.

Mo Anderson asked several of us from the Gulf States Region to have lunch with her and some very special guests who donated thousands and thousands of dollars to Keller Cares.  Everyone had a chance to talk and we talked about Keller Cares and the stories from the Gulf Coast.  It was not an easy conversation.  Everyone was crying. 

Then at the beginning of each session after a break, Mark Willis would ask people to come to the microphone and tell everyone their Big Aha or their Action Plan for when they get back to their Market Centers.  I wanted to use that opportunity to say thank you on behalf of my crew and the rest of the Gulf States Market Centers.  Easier said than done!  I just couldn’t get the words out.  Words simply did not do justice to what 52,000 of our team mates have been doing for the Gulf States Region.  I wanted to say just two words, thank you and they just wouldn’t come out of my mouth.  I got some semblance of “thank you” out and said that I wanted to dedicate the recovery of the Slidell Market Center to Mo Anderson.  I have learned a great deal from Dr. John C. Maxwell and he advocates that if you want to succeed at anything, dedicate the outcome to someone special and at this moment in time there is no one more special than Mo Anderson and her team of angels! 

OK, I made it through that ordeal, on a scale of 1 to 10, I probably hit a minus 4 for being suave and debonair, and in fact it was more like Art Carney.  Then as if I needed it, Mo asked me to sit on a panel in front of 400+ fellow team leaders and operating partners and talk about Keller Cares and Katrina.  I sat there but I could not talk.  The entire time Mo stood beside me and rubbed my back – that was the good part – wanted to tell her she had about two hours to stop it!  Driving home I tried to remember what I said but whatever I said I am not sure people understood it.  I was a complete mess, not an easy thing to admit. 

Just for the record, the attendees at this conference raised well over $200,000 for Keller Cares and they announced that our agent count is now over 52,000 – large round of applause please. 

Now for those who read this and who were in attendance, let me say what I really wanted to say but couldn’t. 

Thank you from the bottom of my heart and the hearts of over 750 of your Keller Williams Associates most of whom you have never met but did not let that stand in the way of your contribution to their recovery. 

Yes, I was emotional, OK, VERY emotional but it was not for what you think.  Yes, the stories are sad and they took their toll on me over the past couple of weeks.  I was emotional because it was just so hard to believe the emotional support, the support in supplies and the financial support that everyone was so eager to provide.  It was just overwhelming and I did not deal with very well and for that I am truly sorry.  I wanted to tell you just how much it means to my crew as I am sure it means to the other Market Centers affected and their crews. 

Because there were so many Team Leaders in the room, I wanted to tell them how helpless I felt when I heard the horror stories of my crew and that I had not prepared myself very well for.  

I wanted to tell them not to wait for a disaster to hit to get prepared.  Create a plan.  Grab your TL and MCA computer and take it with you.  Make sure you have a list of everyone and their contact numbers.  Make sure you enter everyone in the member section of your Market Center Intranet Site so you can access it from any computer with internet access.  Create a contact phone number away from the afflicted area were everyone knows to call to report in.  These are the lessons I wanted to talk about but couldn’t and it was an opportunity lost and for that I am really very sorry. 

I called one of my crew who I knew was in trouble with her home to see if she had heard from Keller Cares and she said yes but that she COULD NOT TALK ABOUT IT!  She simply said, I am sure glad I am with Keller Williams!”

So back to my story.  I am driving home; not feeling very good about myself and my behavior.  Did not listen to Gary Keller, Dave Jenks or John Maxwell on this trip home, I listened to my XM Radio tuned to Watercolors and smooth jazz.  As Dr. Fred suggested, I also put the windows down and let the wind blow my hair.  You may or may not believe the rest of this story but I swear to you that it is true. 

I remember telling Mo at lunch that my concern and I am sure that the concern of everyone in the Gulf States Region was the uncertainty of the future.  What will the future bring?  How many of my crew will decide to go elsewhere or pack it in?  What will the market be like? 

Then I remember Joe Tye who said, “Adversity is a quiet teacher.  You must probe it for the meaning it contains, and interpret the subtle answers with which it will respond.”  He also said, “Courage is to stop worrying about all the possible tomorrows and the trouble they MIGHT bring, and to give your whole attention to the one today in which you always live.”   If there is a more powerful statement, I am not sure I have heard it.  The emphasis should be on MIGHT BRING, not WILL BRING!  No one knows what tomorrow will bring but if you expect the best. you stand a much better chance of achieving it than if you expect the worst. 

On I go toward Louisiana.  As I approach the Sabine River, the river that separates Louisiana and Texas, I started to think; wouldn’t it be nice to have some sort of sign that everything will be OK?  That we all will recover from Katrina and while things will never be the same, they will also not be that bad either.  Shortly after that thought, what should appear in the window of my mobile university?  A beautiful and perfect rainbow – no kidding – it was there right in front of me as if it were creating an arch into the State of Louisiana.  But it did not stop there!  No sir, on the radio Richard Elliott was playing a song entitled “People make the world go round!” 

So, I counted my blessings: 

  • My wife was safe.
  • My kids were safe.
  • My dog was safe.
  • My golf clubs were safe (I didn’t dare put that number one)
  • My KW crew was safe
  • Our Market Center was safe
  • Keller Cares was on our side in a massive turnout
  • I got a couple of hugs and kisses from Mo Anderson and that is never a bad thing
  • People all over the world prayed for our safety – prayers are always welcomed
  • Mo said we need 7 hugs a day, I had enough hugs over the last two days to take me through Christmas – 2006 

Looking ahead, the storm was the easy part; it was over in a short period of time.  Now comes the recovery and there will be achievements and there will be setbacks but we will succeed, all of us in the Gulf States Region.  More importantly, every member of the Keller Williams Family will be proud of their contribution to that recovery and keeping the Keller Williams family INTACT!  There is however, one daunting and impossible task that lies ahead for everyone in the Gulf States Region and that is how do you adequately say thank you?  You might as well try to get toothpaste back into the tube, you would be more successful!
