TYRUS CHANGED MY MIND IN LESS THAN 10 SECONDS

TYRUS CHANGED MY MIND IN LESS THAN 10 SECONDS

By Jim “Gymbeaux” Brown, August 14, 2025

Situation:  I was the Housing Officer for the entire Third Coast Guard District and that included the largest Coast Guard Installation on Governors Island, New York.  I was NOT the housing officer for the residential units on the Island, that fell within the purview of the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Base New York.  Occasionally one of the active-duty Coast Guard family residents would have a teenager who created trouble in one or more of the many ways teenagers do.  The Commanding Officer could not directly discipline the responsible teenager(s) but could take action against the active-duty Coast Guardsman and he did.  In other words, he held the parents responsible for what their teenagers did.  I took the position that no one should be held accountable for the actions of another human being because you cannot be with that human being 24 hours a day.  The Commanding Officer stopped the practice when I pointed out to him that if he orders the Coast Guard family OUT OF COAST GUARD OWNED HOUSING, the Commanding Officer incurs the cost of the move just as if it were a legal transfer of the member to another unit.  That is when the Commanding Officer stopped the practice of holding parents 100% responsible for the activities of their teenage children.  That is how I developed my belief that you cannot hold a parent responsible for the actions of their teenage children.  I held that belief until approximately 9:15 on Tuesday night on August 11, 2025 when I listened to Tyrus.

The discussion revolved around the high number of teenagers in the Washington DC area committing violent crimes at all hours of the day and night, especially late at night between sundown and sunup. My question to you the reader is this:  How would you feel if you were going to be held responsible for the activities of your teenage son or daughter when they are totally out of sight and therefore out of your personal control?  You can only hope and pray they always did the right thing when left to their own discretions; but do they?  Of course not.  Even the best of children gets in trouble doing something stupid; that’s what kids do!

Tyrus, who I consider brilliant when speaking his logical wisdom said something to the effect:  “If I owned a Rottweiler and the dog got loose and attacked someone, who would the authorities go after?  The Dog?  The Owner?  Or Both?”  You know the answer, they would obviously go after the dog but once they found the dog, they would then ascertain who the owner is and then go after the owner.  The owner is responsible for the actions of the owner’s pet Rottweiler.  Therefore, why would not the parents of teenagers engaged in breaking the law also not be responsible for their illegal activities?

Neither Tyrus nor I are trying to suggest that a child is no different than a dog.  The principle of a responsible adult in the room is the same.  The adult IS responsible for the actions of their children in the home but do they have the same responsibilities for the actions of the children like a pet when they are away from the home?  Until last night when Tyrus discussed the metaphor of the dog attacking someone, I would have said not, the adult parent(s) is not responsible.

If you consider the bigger picture of a 13-year-old to as old as a 17-year-old committing a violent act either at night or in broad daylight, you must ask yourself where did the adolescent get the idea that committing such violent crimes was okay?  If school is in session when the crimes are being committed, why are they not in school?  Who is responsible to see that their children are properly educated?  The parents.  Who is responsible for insuring the children are actually in school where they belong?  The local Department of Education (Government).  Parents are turning responsibility of their children over to the school systems all across the country during the times they are actually in school.  It is up to the school systems to track their attendance and then take action when they are not present in school.  In my school days back in the 1950s, my parents would receive a call if I did not show up for school and I did not have my parents’ prior permission to skip school for a specific reason.  That apparently is no longer done or if it is done and the parents do not follow up with their child, then it truly is the responsibility of the parent when one or more of their children engage in committing violent crimes!

I no longer buy into the programmed narrative that a person under the age of 18 does not know what they are doing and therefore should not be prosecuted as if they are an adult.  Commit an adult type crime, pay the adult price for having committed that crime.  Be convicted of committing repeat crimes, double the penalties!

Children ARE like dogs in one sense; they are born but they are NOT born with a CRIME gene nor are dogs born with an ATTACK gene.  Dogs that are historically considered violent dogs can and are dogs that can be trained to be quite docile while still being very protective.  A child has to be taught how to behave, whether that is behavior such as being civil towards others or violent as if others lives do not matter and are expendable (murder).

Children learn this behavior first in the home.  Then they learn it from their friends on the street.  Some learn it in school.  God only knows what they might learn from other criminals while incarcerated.  The point is, lacking a diagnosis of mental illness, behavior IS a learned trait. Where are they learning that crime, especially violent crime, is okay and acceptable?

Every time I see a violent crime like someone murdering one or God forbid, a massive type shooting, one of my first thoughts is: I can’t imagine receiving the knock on the door by the police to tell me that one or more of my children just murdered, robbed, mugged or committed some other violent crime.  Can you imagine receiving such a knock on your door?  What kind of parent would not be phased by such a knock on the door?  I can’t imagine anyone being so uncaring for a life that they were responsible for bringing into this world and who has now committed a violent act against another person or persons.

As a side note, I remember when it was suggested that if you want to learn about how much money a person might be earning, look at the income of the three people they hang around with most of the time.  They will all average about the same income.  I truly believe that committing crimes is much the same.  If a child’s friends believe and act like you would want your child to believe and act, chances are they will always believe and act like that.  If your child’s friends are engaged in criminal activities, likewise your child will do the same.  Likeminded people do likeminded things – together!  The other rule of life is that the “mob rules” and there is safety in numbers.  That is why we see so many mobs of young people attacking and robbing retail stores; there is safety in numbers and they want to belong to the crowd their so-called “friends” belong to.

There is one other aspect of the uptick in violent crimes.  If you know there is no ramifications for your actions, there is not reason NOT to commit the crimes.  It gets much worse.  If an adult KNOWS that adolescents won’t be prosecuted for the crimes they commit, why not get the children to do YOUR dirty work knowing that their children’s henchmen won’t be held accountable for their actions while you reap the rewards of their actions?  Therefore, I ask the question, who is really responsible for these children committing adult type crimes?  Follow the money if that is possible.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t help but always tracking bad behavior back to the parent(s). I specifically used the word parent(s) in parenthesis because so many families have only one parent supervising the family and it is not always just a mother.  It cannot be easy for one person to do the work that heretofore was the work designed for two people.

It is not difficult, at least for me, to see and understand what the problem is.  However, creating a solution, is totally beyond my current ability to do.  Even so, my first inclination would be to hold the local department of education responsible for insuring all children are in school and if they are not, to take immediate action to find out why?  Do parents even know when they children decided not to attend class?  I seriously doubt it!

I am totally guessing that most of the children committing crimes have never seen the inside of a church or they rarely go to church.  In my OPINION, the origin of a lot of this violent behavior goes back to the late 1950s.  The Communist Party USA realized that it would never be able to take over America with military power.  Therefore, they created 45 specific goals that if achieved, would enable them to take over America without ever firing a shot.  These goals were made part of the Congressional Record so no one can say “they were not aware” when we were all told exactly what they intended to do.  Here is link where you can watch a video showing all 45 goals.  The following three stand out the most when considering the increased number of juveniles committing violent crimes:

27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a "religious crutch."

28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."

Tale a look at what happened in America AFTER they removed prayer from schools; it is not a pretty picture!

Number 17 is the objective out of all of the objectives that does the most damage:

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

I sincerely hope you watch the link but I know most probably will not and that is precisely how they will eventually win the battle – through apathy!  If you watch, you will come to the same conclusion that I have; they have already achieved most if not all of these objectives and we are seeing it with out own eyes in the nation’s crime statistics!

ARE YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF YOUR OWN CHILDREN?

HELL YES!
